John's Inspiration:
"Remembering Happiness" is a painting about remembering those we’ve lost and cherishing the memories they leave behind. My father passed away in December 2023, and as my family helped my parents move out of their house, we uncovered countless items that sparked happy memories.
The signature on this piece is a mailing label from Popular Mechanics which is a nod to the magazines that always seemed to fill my parents’ house. My dad was the first person to teach me how to use tools. I vividly remember being a kid in the garage, sawing away at a piece of wood he gave me to "keep me busy," feeling like I was accomplishing something.
As I grew older and began making my own frames, my dad shared his knowledge, showing me techniques and tips that shaped my skills in woodworking and production. He was always there when Michele and I built out our gallery spaces, helping construct walls and tackle projects that needed doing.
These lessons, both big and small, are what I aim to pass on to my son, Lou—being present, teaching by example, and creating a foundation of love and support. This painting is a tribute to the bonds and memories that shape who we are.
