John's Inspiration
Our backyard is like an aviary in the East Bay, filled with everything a bird could ask for—places to forage, feeders to eat from, water to drink, and baths to splash around in. One of the regular residents of our backyard is a male hummingbird who fiercely guards his feeder like a tiny warrior. We recognize him instantly by a tuft of feathers that hasn’t smoothed down, likely the result of a battle he fought to protect his domain.
While the little guy keeps watch in the back, another scenario takes place in the front yard. We have some small bunches of red trumpet flowers where the female hummingbirds will show up to work over the blooms. It’s a quieter scene compared to the battles over the feeder, and there’s something magical about seeing them sip nectar from nature’s offerings, blending so seamlessly into the floral scape.
